WEDNESDAY 10:05 A.M.—2:30 P.M.

By the time the train started moving silently and smoothly out of the station, all was quiet in the compartment. The mother had the two-year-old on her lap and was showing her pictures in a magazine called Tempo while the four-year-old, beside them, looked on desultorily, Karen was reading one of the magazines her policeman friend had helped her select and, since it and the others were in Italian, there was nothing left for Peter but to stare out the window as they rolled past freight cars in the railroad yard, past apartment complexes in the outskirts of Florence, and finally open country.

The car had a gentle rocking motion and the only sound was the whirr of the wheels on the tracks, occasionally turning to a rattle as they went over switches. It was soothing and comforting and Peter was beaten and tired to exhaustion. He leaned back in the safety of his seat and let himself slide over the edge of sleep. He stirred once when Karen took the tickets out of his wallet and that was the last he knew.
